ONE YEAR AT THE GILLS

On February 20, 2016 I travelled to Oldham Athletic for my first game as part of Gillingham Football Club, and what a day it was – 10 hours of travelling, torrential rain and a 2-1 loss against the side sitting bottom of the league.

One year, 25 defeats, 17 draws and 13 wins later, we currently sit one point above the relegation zone.

However, off the pitch it has been quite successful and an enjoyable one personally in my first full-time role in football.

As a two-strong media team, our aim was to give the club greater coverage than what it had previously and take it up to a Championship club level.

In summary, here are some of the highlights of the year:

  • Increasing the club’s social media following by 61% (Twitter, Facebook and Instagram): 66,723 (Feb 2016) –107,122 (Feb 2017)
    • Twitter: 29,900 (Feb 2016) –49,000 (Feb 2017)
    • Facebook: 34,000 (Feb 2016) –52,500 (Feb 2017)
    • Instagram: 2,823 (Feb 2016) –5,622 (Feb 2017)
  • Creating more video content for both YouTube and Gills Player, including Goalcam, Mascotcam, GOTM, interviews (short and full) and other behind-the-scenes videos.
  • Introduction of Periscope, Snapchat and Facebook Live.
  • Winning the EFL’s Family Excellence Award for the first time in the club’s history.
  • Boasting a multi award-winning programme – all credit to Nick.
  • Introducing home/away/third kit matchday graphics, including teamsheets, and quotes images.

  • Bringing in our own photographers, Kent Pro Images, who offer instant/live images throughout the match and quality image galleries post-match.

With there being only two of us we are quite limited in time and resources, however we have more ideas in the pipeline, and hope to expand the club’s coverage further over the coming months.

Any feedback is welcome!

GOALCAM: GILLS 1-1 CHESTERFIELD

Max Ehmer scored his sixth goal of the season against Chesterfield on Tuesday and our Goalcam was on hand to capture the key action!
The Gills captain rose highest to head home Ryan Jackson’s throw on 67 minutes, but there was plenty more goalmouth action, including Rory Donnelly thumping the post on the half-hour.
Ehmer also inadvertently moved our GoPro with his shot shortly before his headed opener, as Goalcam viewers will see in the video!

GOALCAM: BRADFORD 2-2 GILLS

Ady Pennock’s Gillingham battled to a 2-2 draw away at promotion-chasing Bradford City on Saturday, and our Goalcam was on hand to capture the key action!

Watch as Josh Wright scores his sixth goal of the season on his 300th career league appearance, and enjoy Deji Oshilaja’s exquisite finish as he claimed his second in as many games for the Gills.

The Gills return to action on Saturday when they face Port Vale at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium in Sky Bet League One.

LIST: “I’M CONFIDENT IN MY ABILITY”

Elliott List is hoping to build on his performance in his first league start for the Gills in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Oldham and show supporters what he is capable of.

Gills head coach Ady Pennock spoke of the importance of wingers in his first press conference at the club last week, and was impressed with List’s display at the Sportsdirect.com Park on Saturday.

The 19-year-old made a couple of mazy runs down the right-wing against the Latics, before being substituted for Rory Donnelly in the 68th minute.

List on…his first league start: “I just wanted to show the fans what I can do, [to] try and be positive and create something for the team.

“That’s my game, I try and create chances. I still think I can bring more. It [Saturday] wasn’t the best performance I have had, and it wasn’t the worst, but you can always do better, no matter who you are.”

List on…his personal game: “I’ve been practicing one-on-ones with [first-team coach] Steve Lovell, who has been helping me. I’ve been getting at the full-back and trying to get crosses in, while trying to get a lot of the ball.

“I am confident in my ability. I know what I can do. I just have to show everyone else that I am doing the right things; getting balls into the box and scoring goals for the team.”

List on… the new management: “Everyone wants to get behind him [Pennock] and get results for him. We’re devastated we didn’t get the result [on Saturday], but we have to go to Sheffield United and bounce back.”

List on…drawing fouls from the opposition: “I’ve always had that from a young age. I’m always going to get fouled as I am quick, but I don’t mind as long as we get free-kicks in good areas, it’s a positive.
