FEWER MILES ON THE ROAD THIS SEASON

The Gills will travel 1,700 miles fewer than they did last year in Sky Bet League One.

With the likes of Wigan, Blackpool, Barnsley, Doncaster and Crewe either being promoted or relegated at the end of last season, plus the addition on Charlton, AFC Wimbledon, MK Dons and Northampton into League One, the Gills’ travels have been cut by 19 per cent for the upcoming campaign.

In the 2015/16 season Gillingham fans clocked the most miles in League One following their team, travelling 8,747 miles, which amassed to 380 miles per trip on average.

This season the mileage stands at 7047, averaging 308 miles per game.

The furthest trip comes on Saturday, October 29 when Justin Edinburgh’s team travel 284 miles north to face Fleetwood Town. Last season this fixture was played on a wet Tuesday night in March, but the team still had terrific support with 107 fans making the journey.

Monday, April 17 sees the shortest trip, when the team travels to The Valley to face Charlton Athletic for the first time since 2010, when the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

In January the Gills will face an away double header, as they travel 504 miles to Oldham on Saturday, January 14, then 400 miles to Sheffield United on Saturday, January 21 to face the Blades.

Edinburgh’s new look squad have a series of friendly fixtures in July, before the League One season kicks off with a trip to Roots Hall to face Southend on Saturday, August 6.
