Cody McDonald remains a long-term absentee for the Gills. Justin Edinburgh confirmed captain Doug Loft will be out for the weekend’s clash, along with vice-captain John Egan who is out for six to eight weeks.
Loft limped off at the weekend after a crunching tackle left him needing crutches.
Edinburgh: “He (Loft) had a scan on Monday and there is no fracture or break – we were slightly concerned. It is well swollen and we think it will be 10 days to two weeks before he is back in the fray.”
Ryan Jackson has trained with the squad this week and the manager is hopeful that the right-back will be available for selection on Saturday.
“It would be a massive boost as he (Jackson) has been a key player for us this season and one we’ve missed when he’s not played,” he said.
Chesterfield claimed an impressive three points dispatching Crewe on Saturday, however their run before the weekend has left them flirting with the bottom four. The Spireites have claimed just 11 points in 15 games, going back to mid-November.
Both Ian Evatt and Angel Martinez remain on the sidelines for the visitors, who are monitoring Chris Hird’s hip injury. The midfielder lasted just 20 minutes in last weekend’s win over Crewe Alexandra, however is being treated as a minor injury.
LAST TIME WE MET…
High-flying Gills won 3-1 back in October and were going through their best spell of the season, undefeated in seven matches. Goals from Egan, Rory Donnelly and Harry Lennon settled the tie.
In total the teams have met 67 times with Gills winning 30, losing 22 and 15 draws.
